What the Green Canyon actually is

In 1984 the Oymapınar Dam — a concrete arch about 185 metres tall — closed the Manavgat river, and the gorge behind it slowly filled into a mountain lake holding roughly 300 million cubic metres of water. The river itself is remarkable: 93 kilometres long, known as the Melas in antiquity, and fed by giant karst springs that keep it cold, clear and steady all year. One of those springs, Dumanlı, once proposed as the largest of its kind in the world, now lies about 120 metres beneath the surface you cruise.

That spring water is why the lake glows green. Filtered through limestone, it carries the fine minerals that turn sunlight emerald — no dye, no trick of the camera.

How the boat day works

Every cruise starts with a hotel pickup. A coach collects guests along a set route, which is why the exact pickup time is confirmed the day before rather than promised weeks ahead — anyone quoting you a fixed minute at booking is guessing. The road then leaves the coast and climbs along the Manavgat river to the jetty above the dam.

On the water you have two choices: the classic boat tour, about four and a half hours with a freshly prepared lunch on board and unhurried swimming stops, or the catamaran cruise, about two and a half hours of panoramic deck time with one swim stop. Afterwards the coach returns you to your hotel — afternoon or early evening, depending on how far along the coast you are staying.

Where you can join from

Pickup is arranged from the Side and Manavgat area every day, from Alanya every day in the summer season, and from Belek and Antalya on Mondays and Thursdays. The closer you stay to Manavgat, the shorter the ride — from around 20 km (Manavgat town) to over 90 km (Antalya city). Our getting-there guide lists the honest road distances for every resort.

Booking, payment and cancellation

Booking takes a few minutes online and costs nothing upfront: you reserve your seats, the confirmation arrives the same day, and you pay on the day of the tour. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure. Children aged 3–11 join at a reduced rate.

Is it worth it?

If your holiday is all beach, the canyon is the one day that feels like a different country: cool fresh water instead of salt, mountain silence instead of resort noise, and swimming in a lake with 185 metres of engineering holding it in place. Guests who want lively party boats should look at coastal cruises instead — this is deliberately the calm one.
